Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System.  It is a giant planet with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two-and-a-half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined.   Without the tremendous gravity of Jupiter to vacuum up asteroids and comets straying in toward the gravity of the Sun, Earth would be the most massive object close to the Sun and would take the bulk of the impacts.  Not only has Jupiter taken hits for us from asteroids and comets, it protects us another way.  It has locked the asteroids into orbital resonance.
