The early reactors will generate around 100 megawatts and fit into transportable units measuring 23 X 43 ft. It would provide sufficient power for up to 80,000 homes.  Within a year, the first test version of the "Compact Fusion Reactor" could become a reality. A marketable power plant is possible within ten years.  Less than 55 lb. (25 kg) of fuel would be required to run an entire year of operations. Deuterium is produced from sea water and is therefore considered unlimited, while tritium is produced from lithium. The Compact Fusion Reactor uses a "radically new method" for plasma control. In previous experimental reactors the nuclear fusion occurs in a ring-shaped tube which is surrounded by magnetic coils. By placing multiple coils inside the reaction chamber, Lockheed engineers are able to produce a magnetic field of different geometry. In this way, the unit will be ten times more efficient than the current, donut-shaped reactors.  More details at aviationweek.com.
