The photograph was taken by astronaut William Anders with the help of the crew of Apollo 8 from lunar orbit on December 24, 1968 using a Hasselblad 500 EL camera.  As the Apollo 8 crew members later recalled, the most important thing they discovered on their mission was Earth.
