One of the truly underrated artists of the 1960's, Shirley Ellis defined hip with songs like her first hit "The Nitty Gritty".  Released in late 1963 and reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1964.  THE dancer in the front is Bobby Banas (born 1933).  He was 30 years old at the time.  He is known for his work on movies such as West Side Story (1961), Always (1989) and Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), as well as this viral video of a televised performance of the Nitty Gritty dance, which accumulated over 6.5 million views in six years.   Lyrics (excerpt):  "Do you know that some folks know about it, some don't / Some will learn to shout it, some won't / But sooner or later baby, here's a ditty / Say you're gonna have to get right down to the real nitty gritty."   Definition: nitty-gritty: the most important aspects or practical details of a subject or situation.
