SciShow takes you down the deepest hole in the world - Russia's Kola Superdeep Borehole - explaining who dug it and why, and what we learned about Earth in the process.  The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union, on the Kola Peninsula close to Finland.  The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust.  Drilling began on 24 May 1970 and the deepest borehole reached 12,262 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989.  It still is the deepest artificial point on Earth.
