Sail Amsterdam is a 5-year, multi-day maritime event in Amsterdam.  It is rigged around an armada of monumental sea sailing ships, which after a parade through the North Sea Canal moors for a few days along the quay and in the major harbors.  The event was held for the first time in August 1975 in honor of the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam.  Sea sailing ships from all over the world are invited to the event.  A survey conducted in 2016 showed that Sail Amsterdam is known as the most popular event in the Netherlands.  Sail Amsterdam 2015 took place from 19 - 23 August 2015.
