A cosmic phenomenon long theorized but never conclusively observed — until now!  Gravitational waves — ripples in space and time — have changed the world, again.  On Oct 16, 2017, a team of scientists working in collaboration with LIGO, the US-based gravitational wave observatory, and VIRGO, an observatory based in Italy, announced they had for the first time used gravitational waves to locate an object in the sky.  Specifically, they found two neutron stars that had crashed into one another 130 million light-years away.   A kilonova is a type of supernova that occurs when two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole merge in a binary system.  The term kilonova was introduced in 2010 to characterize the energy emitted, which can reach 1000 times the energy emitted in a nova - an astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently "new" star.
