The technique is called "trompe l'oeil" (French for "deceive the eye").  Realistic imagery is used to create the illusion that painted objects exist in three dimensions. 
Here, Daniel and Mario spray-painted the scenery on tin foil wrapped around the tree.  The "floating tree" can be seen in Potsdam, Germany.
