The pilot did the right thing - he found a good place to land and headed right for it. He was too low to have time to diagnose the engine failure, so he put it down on a road. However, it seems that his descent rate was too high, which means his airspeed was also too high causing a bounce when landing. He should have flared the nose a bit at approx 6 feet above the ground in order to reduce the airspeed before touching down.
