Physics explanation: 1. The explosive material inside the grenade burns and turns into a very hot & dense gas.   2. The heat energy is rapidly transmitted to the grenade's shell, increasing the metal's elasticity.   3. As the super hot gas expands, so does the hot metal shell.   4. The shell continues to expand until it reaches the "elasticity limit" of the metal.   5. When the elasticity limit is surpassed, the metal can no longer keep its form and begins to fragment.
