"Brand New Key" (also known as "The Rollerskate Song") is a pop song written by folk singer Melanie Safka in 1971. It is about a girl with roller skates trying to attract the attention of a boy. The roller skates would have been quad skates, which were clamped to the soles of ordinary shoes using a special "key", which was often lost or misplaced. It was Melanie's biggest hit, reaching Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in December 1971.   Video from: Evian Babies
