Though BlackFly has full amphibious capabilities, it is primarily designed to easily operate from small grassy areas and travel distances of up to 25 miles at a speed of 62 mph (USA restriction).

Fault-tolerant design and triple modular redundancy reside at the core of these vehicles. Eight propulsion systems, spread across two wings, provide for multiple-failure security. Years of continuous testing, combined with 1,000+ flights and 10,000+ miles flown, form the bedrock of its development program. The craft takes off vertically, then transitions to forward flight, with the wings providing some lift. Vertical fins on the two wing tips assist in steering, but it's mostly the work of propellers to orient the craft. A pilot's license likely won't be required, but the company will mandate buyers to complete a familiarization course and a standard written exam for FAA Private Pilot licenses. The vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft is flown with a joystick, has a pushbutton 'Return-to-Home' system for autonomous flight back to its base, and can be outfitted with an emergency parachute. The battery can be recharged in as little as 25 minutes.
