Airbus and Boeing – with its 787 Dreamliner – are engaged in a battle for supremacy in a new generation of lightweight carbon-composite jets designed to save fuel and open new long-distance routes.  The A350 is built with 70 percent advanced materials with both the fuselage and wings made mostly of carbon composites.  The wings are the largest ever produced for a wide-body plane.  According to Airbus, the A350 XWB uses 25 percent less fuel than the Boeing 777 and an 8 percent less than the 787.
