In the 3rd century BC, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth to high precision.  This is a short segment from Episode 1 of the series "Cosmos" by the late Carl Sagan - the most poetic popularizer of science in the 20th century.   Eratosthenes of Cyrene (276 BC – 194 BC) was a Greek polymath (mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist).  He was a man of learning, becoming the chief librarian at the Library of Alexandria. He invented the discipline of geography, including the terminology used today.
