The aircraft was built to transport the Russian Space Shuttle "Buran".  Designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Kiev, Ukraine, the "Mriya" (Ukrainian for "dream) is not a military aircraft, but is capable to transport cargo that no other aircraft is able to.  The airplane had its first flight in early 1988 and entered service in 1989.  The Antonov-225 is the world's heaviest aircraft, although its wingspan is less than that of the "Spruce Goose" (Howard Hughes' flying boat), which never flew more than a single, short, low-altitude test flight.  The Antonov-225 is also larger than the C-5 Galaxy (the largest aircraft in the U.S. inventory) and the Airbus A380.
