Sep 26, 2008 Yves Rossy successfully completed an amazing challenge and became the first man to fly across the Channel, using a homemade, single, jet-powered wing. He covered a distance of 37 km (23 miles) in 13 minutes. Yves jumped out of a plane above Calais. Once his wing stabilized, he began his flight, traveling full throttle, heading for the United Kingdom. With a light wind at his back, he reached the iconic White Cliffs of Dover in 13 minutes, covering the 37 km trip at an average speed of 200 km/h (120 mph). He then deployed his parachute and landed. "Jet Man" traced the route of French aviator Louis Bleriot, who became the first person to fly across the Channel in an airplane 99 years ago.
