The etymology of the name woodchuck is unrelated to wood or chucking. It stems from an Algonquian name for the animal, wuchak. Nevertheless, the apparent relationship between the two words has led to the common tongue-twister:
" How much wood would a woodchuck chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck
if a woodchuck could chuck wood! "
Occasionally,
"How much ground would a groundhog hog if a groundhog could hog ground?"
or
"How much beaver would a land-beaver land if a land-beaver could land beaver?"
is used as an alternative reply to the opening question.
