History: Coffee Car Mark 1 was designed and constructed for BBC "Bang Goes the Theory" and featured in an episode in 2010. Jem Stansfield wanted to design a car that would run on waste products and after noticing that a number of coffee shops were producing large quantities of used coffee granules he came up with the concept of a coffee car!
In March 2010 the team was awarded a
Guinness World Record for the longest journey travelled by a coffee powered car.
A 1988 Volkswagon Scirocco was driven 337 km from London to Manchester (UK) powered by coffee.
The modified car works by heating the coffee granules in a charcoal fire, which then break down into carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
The gas is then cooled and filtered before the hydrogen is combusted to drive the engine.
The process works because coffee granules contain a small amount of carbon.
