In other words: The trick turns your head into an antenna. The key's remote has a very small antenna on its printed circuit board.  Holding the remote key fob against your head makes your body part of the antenna that the remote control circuit uses to communicate with your car.  Think back to the days of TVs having “rabbit ears” for antennas.  Sometimes the best reception occured when you were touching it.
