After the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket delivered its payload — a Dragon spacecraft — into low-Earth orbit, the booster flew back to Earth and performed a precise landing.  SpaceX has now done three-for-three successful landings of its first stage boosters at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.  "Baby came back" said SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.   Viewer comment:  "It is an amazing feat of engineering.  Even one engine on for too long will cause the rocket to start to go back up.  The engines are just too powerful.  This rocket can't hover. So they do a 'hoverslam' - the engine or engines kick in exactly when they need to so that the rocket has close to zero velocity as it hits the ground.  At the same time they have to keep it upright and make sure they hit the target.  This is usually done on a barge in the ocean, adding to the complexity.  So it is in freefall until the last few seconds then the engines kick in to make it land daintily on the ground.  This is not easy to do."
